This Graphic Design project must be saved as a multi-page PDF (use Adobe Acrobat Professional), and saved in the appropriate location on the server, in order to be considered a "Completed Assignment"

You will be assigned a number. Your assigned number must appear at the bottom left corner of your menu cover.

Restaurants will pay serious money for a well designed menu. Why? Well, it has a lot to do with the idea that they specialize in food and eating concepts. Restaurant owners have focused their talents on the design, assembly, and presentation of food (See FoodNetwork , Cake Boss, and Top Chef). They need graphic designers to translate their products in a visual manner, to attract the outside world to their estabslihments. Hence, this is why they call on you - to turn their wonderful menu items into a virtual invitation to the general masses.

Yes. It is a big responsibility.

OPEN THESE MENUS AND STUDY THEM CLOSELY: Teacher's Menu Page Example, MENU 1, MENU 2, MENU 3, MENU 4

Assignment: As a graphic designer, you will need the menu list (click here). Use Photoshop and Illustrator to construct a 4-page menu and a separate cover for the "All-Nighter Diner". Use Photoshop to do all of your "Knock Out" work and graphic enhancements on images of food items, tiled backgrounds, etc.. Use Illustrator to do all of the actual page layout work (text, lines, borders, logo, etc.,) Read below to research appropriate items necessary for a complete and eye-appealing menu. Remember: The Cover is not considered one of the pages!

Here are some considerations for this type of design Logo for restaurant (10 points)
You must create a brand new logo for the restaurant. The owners are neither creative or original. They are trusting on you to come up with something cool, fresh, and appetizing to those who walk in their doors.

  • Create three "thumbnails"
  • Create one "comp"

Categories of food

  • Appetizers
  • Beverages
  • Dinners
  • Deserts
  • etc.

Use of graphic elements

  • Colors
  • Fonts
  • Lines and Boarders
  • Balance
  • Rhythm
  • Eliminate negative space/crowded space
  • Spacing and Alignment
  • Eliminate "bullets" (they come with the original text document)

Graphics and Text Wrapping

  • Graphics with good "knock-outs"
  • Text "wraps" around knocked-out images
  • Good use of Layer effects (glows, drop shadows, bevels, etc)

Authenticity and Appropriateness
How does the instructor observe the overall menu aesthetic?
How convincing do they feel your menu is?
Does it reach a level of authenticity that makes the menu appear "real".
Does the menu seem mismatched in the idea that this greasy-spoon diner appears to be serving five-star cuisine?
Does your design simply use the same graphics and background over and over again?
Did you fix the spelling errors and sentence fragments? Check with your instructor to see if your corrections are right
Is the text easy to read? Are the category headers different sizes/colors/fonts than the item lables and descriptions?

IS THE OVERALL DESIGN BORING? PLEASE CHECK WITH YOUR INSTRUCTOR/CLIENT/BOSS TO GET THEIR OPINION.

Other Considerations

At least 3 or 4 levels.

  • Restaurant name should be large
  • Categories should be medium-large
  • Entree, appetizer etc. Should be medium-small
  • Food descriptions and prices should be small
  • Consider using colored type to get the viewer's attention.
  • The Restaurant name and categories should be an easy to read novelty font.
  • Food categories, price, address and phone numbers should be San serif or something else as long as it's really easy to read.

Margins - Type shouldn't be too close to the edge of the menu.
